Are K-Cups Recyclable? - Singlecup.ca - Online Coffee Ordering - Featured Image

A question we hear quite often is “are our single cups or K-Cups recyclable?” We’re here to tell you loud and proud that yes they are! Singlecup is committed to reducing our environmental impact and increasing sustainability of the coffee market and we only partner with growers and organizations that also have this goal in mind.

Naturally it makes sense that part of that impact is making our products recyclable! Here’s how we keep that promise not just to you, but to Mother Nature!

Recycling plastics is something that most major cities in Canada, including Edmonton and Calgary, are actively working into their already present recycling programs. The majority of these cities offer safe, curbside pick up making it that much easier for you to help us reach our goal of recycling as much of our plastic products as possible! The plastics used to make K-Cups are from #5 plastics, which can be recycled, but you MUST clean them first! With K-Cups, you first need to remove the foil lid and thoroughly clean out the coffee grounds before you toss it in your recycling bin!

Depending on the brand you’ve purchased to enjoy your single serving, the recycling process may be a bit different. PurPods, for example, are 100% compostable as they are and can be disposed of directly into a green bin after it’s finished brewing. Other single cup servings, such as Real Cups or Single Serve Capsules, may require a slightly different recycling process. Foil or the full lid may need to be cut away and double check to make sure the filter has been fully removed. It’s important to remove the bits that can’t be recycled as failing to clean out the plastic makes it that much more difficult, or even impossible, to recycle. Remember that no matter how you’re making sure to recycle your Single Use Cup, those leftover coffee grounds are compostable!

We mention compost because we know just how good coffee grounds are for the compost heap! If you have house plants, you can give them a slow stream of nitrogen by sprinkling some of your used coffee grounds onto the soil and watering as normal. We want to ensure you and your plants enjoy a nice cup of coffee!

Doing our part to contribute to the vitality and wellbeing of our earth is important to us. We know there’s always room to do more and we’re dedicated to providing Canadians and our international customers with the promise of a good cup of coffee you can use twice.
